Focus on maintenance and protection. A little attention now prevents winter damage and makes spring easier.
Winter protection and storm readiness
- After wind or ice, check trees for hanging limbs and remove hazards promptly.
- Brush snow and ice off shrubs and evergreens gently. Avoid shaking or striking branches.
- Keep foot traffic light on frozen lawns.
Beds and landscape structure
- Spot-weed on mild days. Winter weeds don’t take holidays.
- Leave healthy perennial stems if you want winter interest, but remove anything diseased or collapsing onto nearby plants.
Planting and watering
- You can still plant trees and shrubs when the ground isn’t frozen. Winter planting often performs well with the right watering.
- Water newly planted trees and shrubs during dry periods, even in winter.
Lawn care (fescue and bermuda)
Tall fescue
- Mow only as needed if growth continues. Keep height high.
- Keep leaves and debris off the lawn.
Bermuda
- Leave it alone except for keeping it clean. Avoid unnecessary traffic when it’s frosty.
Irrigation, drainage, and outdoor systems
- If your irrigation system is winterized, keep it off.
- Watch drainage during winter rains and note problem areas for spring corrections.
Hardscape and outdoor lighting
- Keep walkways and steps clear and safe.
- Conduct a check of lighting performance and aiming to ensure reliable visibility during the long winter nights.
